Oh Kenilworth!
This week is a big week for Britain; the Queen’s 90th birthday, Shakespeare’s 400th birthday and of course, St George’s Day. Being as this week is filled with so much history we wanted to find out a bit more about our beloved home, Kenilworth.
Don’t worry; we won’t keep you long as we don’t want this to turn into a history lesson just a few facts to get you thinking!
- Kenilworth’s history goes back to the Roman times, it wasn’t mentioned in the Domesday Survey of 1086. That’s a long old time, hard to imagine Romans marching around in their full amour and helmets
- The castle: Most of its functioning life the castle was held by the crown. However it was home to some interesting characters including, Robert Dudley the Earl of Leicester who turned the fortress into a palace in preparation of Queen Elizabeth I’s visit
- During the Civil War, it was occupied by Parliament and soon after it was ordered that most of the Castle should be dismantled- that explains a lot!
- Lord Clarendon was granted the castle following this and it remained in the family until 1930.
- Lord Kenilworth bought the castle and his son gifted it to the town in the 1950s.
Who knew there was such a flourishing history in our little town?
Class dismissed!
